There is an active investigation after two Sunnyside police officers were involved in a shooting during a police chase. The incident started when deputies were dispatched to a home for a violation of a No Contact Order, and Sunnyside police were asked to assist.
Police said that the suspect fled and refused to stop for officers, and a chase began. Allegedly the chase the suspect intentionally rammed a patrol car multiple times, disabling it.
The department says the suspect also then rammed a YPD deputy’s patrol SUV on the driver’s side, pushing the patrol car into a vineyard, injuring the deputy. Two Sunnyside officers shot at the runaway suspect.
The chase ended when the fleeing vehicle was disabled, police say. One deputy was taken by ambulance for injuries from the suspect ramming his car.
The suspect is a 63-year-old male from Sunnyside, and he’s facing charges of 1st and 2nd Degree Assault, DUI, Eluding, and Violation of a No Contact Order.
The Yakima Valley Special Investigative Unit has been called in to investigate.
